Chandelier Buying Guide for Indian Homes: Size, Height and Price

How to size a chandelier or jhumar for your room, how long the drop should be for standard and double-height ceilings, what to check before hanging it from a false ceiling, and what to budget.

Most chandelier mistakes in Indian homes come down to three numbers: the size of the room, the height of the ceiling and the length of the drop. Get those right and the choice of style, whether crystal, brass or modern, becomes the easy part. This guide covers all three, plus the fixing question most buyers only ask after the false ceiling is closed.

1. Size the chandelier to the room

A widely used rule of thumb: add the room's length and width in feet, and use that number in inches as the chandelier's diameter. A 12 × 14 ft living room adds up to 26, so a chandelier about 26 inches (roughly 65 cm) wide will sit comfortably. In a drawing room where the chandelier hangs over a seating group rather than the whole room, size it to the seating area instead.

Over a dining table, aim for a chandelier between one-half and two-thirds the width of the table, so nobody knocks it when they stand up. Our dining room lights list widths on every piece.

2. Match the drop to the ceiling height

  • Standard 9–10 ft ceilings: keep at least 7 ft of clearance under the chandelier where people walk. Over a dining table, hang the bottom of the fixture 30–36 inches above the tabletop.
  • Double-height halls and duplex staircases: a long-drop or tiered piece fills the vertical space instead of floating lost near the ceiling. A common working rule is 2.5–3 inches of chandelier height for every foot of ceiling height. Browse our double-height chandeliers for staircases and foyers.

3. Check what it will hang from

Many Indian homes have gypsum or POP false ceilings, and these are not built to carry a heavy fixture. Heavier chandeliers, crystal ones especially, should be anchored to the concrete slab above, with a hook or rod fixed before the false ceiling is closed. Plan the fixing point with your electrician at the false-ceiling stage, not after.

4. Choose the material for the room

5. Set a realistic budget

As a rough guide, chandeliers in India fall into four price bands: under ₹15,000, ₹15,000–45,000, ₹45,000–1,00,000, and above ₹1,00,000. Size, crystal quality and the number of lights account for most of the difference between them. Every Lumeil chandelier ships free across India and is dispatched within 3 working days.
