Is the red bead real ruby?No, it is coloured glass. The name refers to its deep red tone.

Did You Know Fact About The CategoryRuby red glass owes its colour to gold. In the 1680s the chemist Johann Kunckel, working near Potsdam, perfected a way of adding tiny amounts of dissolved gold to the glass batch. Reheating the glass made the gold gather into particles small enough to turn it a deep red. Known as gold ruby glass, the technique made German and Bohemian red glass famous.

Ruby Chime runs a column of glass beads down to a ribbed clear bell, with a deep red bead set at its centre like a single jewel. This tall pendant light suits a bedside, a dressing table corner, an entrance or a restaurant booth.
A grey textured ball tops the line, then an amber textured spindle, the red bead, a small ribbed amber bead, a clear textured spindle and a smoked ball. Gold-finish collars part each piece, and a flared gold collar holds the clear ribbed bell. This beaded glass pendant measures 150mm across and 870mm in fitted height.
One E14 bulb lights the bell from inside, so the ribs draw the light into fine bright lines beneath while the red and amber glass glows faintly above. Over a restaurant table, it works as a booth pendant light that marks each seat.
