Description

Not every chandelier has to follow a traditional architectural design. Some have a more natural feel to them. The Botanica CX1913 is a great example of this. It begins with a hand-formed iron armature that winds its way downward in a double-helix, giving it a shape that's actually like a climbing vine - but frozen in glass instead of growing up a trellis. Every branch has individually cast teal green glass flowers perched on it, their petals all textured and slightly see-through. They're spaced out at random, so you never see quite the same pattern twice. And as it spirals downward, the shape tightens up a bit, which some how actually makes it look more natural than it would if it was all lined up perfectly. Walking past the thing when it's unlit, you'd swear you're looking at some kind of sculptural garden hanging in the air. It's only when you flick the switch on and the thing lights up that you get a real sense of what it's actually meant to be - a living, growing thing that casts organic shadows on the walls around it. And the best part is, you can totally see the difference as you move around the room - which is perfect if the thing's going to be hanging in a hotel lobby or on a staircase, where people are always moving past it.

Did you know that the teal and emerald glass colours in the Botanica come from copper oxide compounds? Yeah, it's a technique that's been around for thousands of years - way back to ancient Egypt, when they first started making coloured glass using copper-based pigments. And the cool thing is that the concentration of copper oxide is what changes the colour - at low concentrations, it goes blue-green, and at higher concentrations, it turns into a deep emerald green. Now when it's used in translucent chandelier glass, it actually lets the light through in a really warm and aquatic way - and the colour seems to deepen right at the edges, where the glass is thinnest.

What does the ceiling have to be like for the Botanica to look its best?

You'll need a minimum of 14 feet of clearance, but 16-20 feet is going to get you the full effect of this thing. And in a staircase installation, just make sure it's positioned so that the bottom of the spiral clears out the landing on top by at least 7 feet. You can adjust the drop length from the ceiling plate if you need to.

Can the spiral configuration of the armature be changed after it arrives?

Sorry, but the iron vine armature is actually pre-formed, so the spiral configuration is fixed. You can't just bend it on site without messing up the finish. But you can adjust the overall drop height by fiddling with the suspension wires from the ceiling plate. And if you're doing a bespoke installation for a hotel or a commercial space, just give us a shout and we can set up a custom configuration for you.
